CV/Resume

Dr. Melissa A. May is an Associate Professor of Marine Biology and Marine Science Program Coordinator at Ä¢¹½TV. Dr. May's work focuses on the ecophysiology of marine invertebrates, particularly bivalves, examining how factors such as temperature, food availability, salinity, and habitat characteristics influence physiological performance, stress tolerance, and ecosystem function. Her research spans scales from cellular and molecular mechanisms—including proteomics, metabolomics, and stress-response pathways—to applied questions in oyster and hard clam restoration, water quality, and coastal resilience. Since joining Ä¢¹½TV in 2020, Dr. May has secured more than $4 million in external funding and developed a student-centered research program, providing students with field based opportunities through Vester Field Station and more traditional lab experiences. She has mentored more than 40 undergraduate researchers, served on numerous graduate committees, and advised graduate students conducting research in marine ecology, physiology, restoration, and environmental science. Her students regularly present their work at regional, national, and international scientific conferences, often as first authors. Through research, teaching, and service, Dr. May is committed to advancing marine science while training the next generation of scientists and environmental leaders.
