This is a selection of works from the 'The New Now', Spring 2023 Senior show. Every Senior Project is a showcase of talent from the DMD Program, the works in the show are as diverse and engaging as the students who have created them. The works range from video games, branding, illustration and animation to kickstarting new business concepts.

Rene Lai | Liminal Space
Toggle More InfoThe theme of my senior project is liminal space. Liminal space is a concept of space that feels surreal yet familiar. It gives the audience a sense of nostalgia in an unsettling way. In liminal spaces, the absence of clear directions or living beings creates an eerie atmosphere that can leave individuals feeling lost, disconnected, and as though their sense of self has been erased. For my project, I aim to evoke these emotions and emphasize the aesthetic of liminality through delivering a series of immersive Blender animations.

Celeste Winnie | AtmosSphaera
Toggle More InfoAlien VTuber: Atmos Sphaera is a long-term, multimedia virtual experience synthesizing illustration, graphic design, animation, and streaming to bring to life an extraterrestrial alter-ego of mine named Atmos Sphaera. In livestreams, Atmos will be offering commentary on niche games and creative work, demonstrating illustration and music, and inviting viewers to participate in discussion. Through the Atmos persona, I
aim to create an online community space where viewers, particularly those who enjoy video games, art, music, and Japanese culture, can find joy and a deeper appreciation for the creativity of human beings.

Rachael Kelley | Be Bold
Toggle More Info"Don’t Imagine Yourself as Just a Single Photo". This is a rule that would have changed my life astronomically as a middle schooler and teenager. In the age of technology and social media, we have started to condition ourselves to see life as small snapshots and boomerangs. Remember, you are like a sunset. Forever moving, forever changing, forever beautiful.

Luis Garcia| Star Fall
Toggle More InfoI wanted to share a story while still displaying my level of illustration and aesthetic so the whole idea of creating a comic specifically came to mind. I wanted to make the narrative that leads more towards the slice of life and a small portion of it with supernatural elements. I went with the trials of overcoming anxiety and searching for your own purpose of life; I went with these two themes for the narrative because this is something that could be relatable to the reader and my goal as a storyboard artist is to have the audience to be hooked on the story and to reflect upon themselves for a brief moment and think about if they might of experience something similar to what the character in the story might've felt. I want others to feel something from what they read and that is a crucial goal for anyone in the creative field. We all have a story to share, and we have a variety of ways of expressing this, in a hypothetical way.

Sarah Dean | Comet Convenience
Toggle More InfoMy comic book, Comet Convenience is the perfect embodiment of my passion for science fiction, humor, and character driven story. The making of this comic book was a journey of conceptualization, execution, and realization. My love for science fiction and my fascination with space prompted me to explore the idea of a convenience store in space. I was intrigued by the possibilities and opportunities that this concept offered

Kassidy Grant | "Be Kind" a kindness promotion app
Toggle More InfoI wanted to find a way to promote kindness within people’s communities and around the world. 'Be Kind' is an app that sends you simple everyday tasks that encourage you to be kind to others. It’s easy to be focused on yourself and what you need to do throughout the day, but it’s important to remember there are other people around us to connect with, strangers and friends alike. Sometimes all it takes is a smile to make someone’s day a little brighter.

Marissa Cella | Endangered animal species exhibit
Toggle More InfoThe concept I developed for Senior Project was to create a museum exhibit focused on endangered animal species that utilizes an interactive component to engage the viewers. For the show, my goal was to create an example of a museum exhibit that would feature an interactive display that middle school age visitors, ages 13 and younger, could use. The content of the display involves factual pages giving more information about six specific endangered animal species, a short trivia quiz to test your knowledge, and an outline of humans impacts on all animals.

Brianna Owens | "Medusa Hair Products"
Toggle More InfoI created the branding and marketing deliverables for a curly hair product company named “Medusa. Even though I have always been known for having curly hair, I did not always feel comfortable and confident with my hair, just like many others who have naturally curly hair. People with curly hair are always told that their hair is “too unruly or “too frizzy and should be tamed or straightened. I did not learn to accept and embrace my hair until late high school. As a result, I was inspired to create branding and promotional materials for a curly hair product with the goal of encouraging and empowering other women to love their curly hair and feel confident within themselves.

Alyssa Fraser | Knox + Nash
Toggle More InfoFor my senior project I created a country fashion brand called Knox + Nash. I produced a magazine, designed a website, illustrated stickers, posters, and made sample products. I wanted to create this brand not only because I’m passionate about all things western and all things fashion, but also because I’ve noticed over time that clothing brands could better display their product when it comes to their promotional photos. That’s why with Knox + Nash I strived to create lifestyle photos and topics that are relatable as well as intriguing as opposed to clothes featured with a white background. I really wanted the models I used and the photos I took to fully embody what the country lifestyle looks like and what country living is all about.
