Hurricane season is quickly approaching! Each year during the first full week of May (May 4-10, 2025) the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) recognize this nationwide initiative to urge preparedness ahead of hurricane season. This week will highlight the different ways residents can prepare and protect themselves, their loved ones and their homes this hurricane season. Select a day to learn more about how you can get prepared.

• Sunday, May 4 - Know Your Zone, Know Your Home
• Monday, May 5: Prepare Before Hurricane Season
• Tuesday, May 6: Understand Forecast Information
• Wednesday, May 7: Get Moving When a Storm Threatens
• Thursday, May 8: Stay Protected During Storms
• Friday, May 9: Use Caution After Storms
• Saturday, May 10: Take Action Today

Take time to focus on evacuation planning. Know your zone & know your home to best understand storm-related evacuation orders.

Educate - Then Evacuate

Educate

• Know if you live in an evacuation zone
• Understand your home and its ability to withstand strong winds and heavy rain
• Keep your vehicle gas tank halfway full to get halfway there
• Plan evacuation routes

Evacuate

• Listen to all orders from local officials
• Leave as soon as your zone is ordered to do so - every moment counts
• Evacuate tens, not hundreds of miles
• If you don't live in an evacuation zone, you may be able to shelter in place.

#MakeAPlan ahead of hurricane season. Be ready this hurricane season by following the 3 simple steps below

• Make a Plan
• Build a Disaster Supply Kit
• Stay Informed

It鈥檚 important to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, especially during hurricane season. Prepare for hurricane season by knowing about the different alerts & the difference between watches & warnings.

• Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts
• Know that hazards may still be dangerous outside of predicted area
• Focus on potential impacts regardless of storm size or category
• Know the difference beween watches and warnings

Know what to do when a storm threatens your area. Be proactive by preparing ahead of hurricane season.

• Protect Your Home: Cover windows, secure doors, and secure loose items.
• Ready Your Go Bag: Pack meds and supplies and charge your phone.
• Keep your gas tanks halfway full in case evacuation orders are issued.
• Determine sheltering options and don't forget to consider pets.

 Stay protected during storms.

Residents & visitors are reminded to take precautions & keep themselves & their families safe during a storm. Make sure you know what to do to stay safe:

• Stay away from downed power lines
• Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts
• Don't go outside until the storm has passed

Use caution after storms.

• Stay inside until officials say it is safe to leave.
• Be aware of the dangers of downed power lines and floodwaters
• Never enter flooded areas - turn around, don't drown
• Only use generators outside and 20+ feet from your home

Take action today

1. Consider your threats (storm surge, tornadoes, rip currents, damaging winds, flooding)
2. Make a plan and begin preparing now, before a storm.
3. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
4. Know what to do before, during, and after a storm.

Opioid abuse is a widespread issue that leads to addiction, overdose and many negative outcomes within our community. While there is not currently an opioid epidemic on 蘑菇TV campus, prevention and awareness are known as best practices to keep our faculty, staff and students safe. Throughout November and December, the University Police Department along with the Emergency Management Department created opioid awareness by offering several prevention activities for members of the community to attend. These activities helped faculty and staff to recognize the warning signs and symptoms of opioid abuse with a focus on Fentanyl and its potential impact to our campus and community. UPD also communicated how they will respond to a reported overdose situation on campus.
