Collier EBCS: Third Quarter 2024 Report

Data from the second quarter of 2024 suggests that the national economy is beginning to slow, though signals are still mixed. While the labor market remains strong, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.1 percent in June, marking the highest level since October 2021. In contrast, advanced estimates for real gross domestic product (GDP) were more optimistic, showing a 2.8 percent annualized increase and surpassing expectations for the second quarter of 2024. This followed a weak first quarter when real GDP grew at a meager 1.4 percent annualized rate. GDP gains come as sentiment among consumers, who represent roughly two-thirds of total GDP, fell during the second quarter, dropping 11.2 points from March to June 2024. Commentary from the June survey suggested that consumers continue to express concerns about high prices and weakening incomes on their personal finances.

The Southwest Florida Leadership Institute, bolstered by the support of a $22.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA), hosted the Building Equitable Workplaces: 2024 Summer Workshop Series, designed to equip organizations and leaders with the knowledge, tools, and strategies necessary to advance workplace equity, foster inclusive cultures, and build robust talent pipelines. By addressing critical areas in human resources management, talent acquisition, and leadership development, the workshop series aligns with the mission of the Southwest Florida Equitable Jobs Pipeline to cultivate a skilled workforce and drive economic prosperity in the region. We are excited to share the outcomes of our recent initiative workshops. Over the course of three dates鈥擩une 14 and July 24 at Collaboratory, and July 19 at Pelican Preserve in partnership with SHRM-SWFL鈥攚e engaged with a diverse audience and explored critical topics around equity and inclusion.

Issue Brief: Entrepreneurs in College

Entrepreneurial activity is a crucial component of any growing economy. Entrepreneurs are inherently risk-takers that inject new ideas, products and services into the market, bringing with them job creation and economic growth to their local economy. Many programs at higher education institutions, including 蘑菇TV, offer programs tailored toward helping entrepreneurs launch their business. However, measurement of entrepreneurs attending college programs is sparse, with limited data collected on them. In this issue brief, we attempt to define an 鈥渆ntrepreneur in college鈥� to gain a better understanding of this demographic.
