Importance of ADA Compliance

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires web content to be accessible for people with disabilities. Ä¢¹½TV is required to be ADA compliant across all online resources. WCAG 2 guidelines are the standards that Ä¢¹½TV follows.

As a web editor, it is your responsibility to maintain ADA compliant content on your site. This protects the university from lawsuits and prevents accessibility barriers on the website.

Image Compliance

Images are used extensively on the Ä¢¹½TV website, and can create major barriers if they are not optimized for accessibility. For every image uploaded to the site, editors must add a description/alternative text.

Infographics or images containing text are not ADA compliant and should not be uploaded to the site. For every image, write alternative text that provides the information or function of the image. For purely decorative images, there is no need to write alternative text.

Content Compliance

Heading order/ hierarchy is very important for ADA compliance.

Nest headings by their rank (or level). The most important heading has the rank 1 (<h1>). The least important heading is rank 6 (<h6>). Headings with an equal or higher rank start a new section. Headings with a lower rank start new subsections that are part of the higher ranked section.

Skipping heading ranks can be confusing and should be avoided where possible. Make sure that a <h2> is not followed directly by an <h4>. For example, it is ok to skip ranks when closing subsections, for instance, a <h2> beginning a new section, can follow an <h4> as it closes the previous section.

Ensuring PDF ADA Compliance

How to Check for ADA Compliance

Although the CMS checks for Accessibility Errors before publishing, it will not catch everything. It is crucial for editors to be knowledgeable on the rules, regulations, and how to check for ADA compliance in order to produce high quality accessible website content.
